After the sweetest proposal, 6 years together and a 3 year engagement, Matt + Holly said "I do" to forever in front of almost 100 of their closest friends and family in Maroochy Botanic Gardens on the Sunshine Coast. A day that involved local vendors and many of their own DIY skills, their Wedding day vision comes to life to life and Holly tells us all about their gorgeous rustic themed Wedding day.

Tell us a little bit about the proposal:
It was the day after I’d given birth to our son River and Matt had organised with the nurses in the Maternity Ward to put a wrist hospital tag on River that said ‘will you marry me’. Matt told me to go and have a shower, which I did and when I came out he was holding Riv, handed him to me and told me it was maybe time for a feed so I unwrapped him and saw his wrist and started to cry straight away! And obviously, I said yes and gave him a huge cuddle with our new boy.

Any funny stories leading up to the Wedding day?
Our setup involved alot of greenery and we had it hanging from the ceiling, on the tables, on the wall above the bar - so much so that we needed way more than we could afford from a florist, instead we chopped a tree down from our backyard and stripped it, put it in a van and used it all for the venue set up - all the day before the Wedding!

How did you decide on your Wedding venue?
We looked at so many around the Sunshine Coast but every single one we contacted came in way over budget and we were worried about spending so much for just the venue. We wanted a blank canvas to work with and somewhere located in more of a farm/bush type feel to it, with lots of greenery around and a rustic vibe. When we visited Verrierdale Hall, we loved it - it was exactly what we were looking for and it was so affordable! We made it look exactly as we wanted and that’s all we needed.

➳ What was the inspiration behind your Wedding theme?
Probably like most Brides-to-be nowadays, I scrolled through Instagram and Pinterest furiously for ideas and got most style inspo from there. I loved the romantic theme, with loads of fairy lights and simplistic/native florals surrounding everything. I wanted something that wasn’t flashy and took away from what the day is truly about, instead a vibe more natural and subtle. I didn’t want the Wedding to feel like an event or a show - but instead, a celebration of two people coming together and joining two families and I wanted the surroundings to reflect that.

➳ What was your favourite detail about the day?
My flowers were one - my Nan was a florist for over 30 years and created the most amazing arrangements and bouquets, I couldn’t have wished for anything better. What’s more, is that she did that after rescheduling brain surgery for melanoma that had spread, she was supposed to be operated on the day before my Wedding. But she flew from Sydney to be there, drove to Brisbane at 5 in the morning, picked out flowers from wholesalers with me, came home and put together everything. She passed away in December and I see the beauty in it all and see how her love was truly amazing and so very special. Also, I really loved my bridesmaids/men’s outfits - they came together so well!

➳ How long did it take for you to find your dress?
I went to Sphere Collective, tried on a few gowns and then I put on the dress from Made with Love and knew straight away. Mum cried and so did I - I was so lucky to come across the dress so easily. I emailed a few shops and a few designers before going in to Sphere Collective about finding a dress and people left, right and centre were telling me I left it too late for 5-6 months out! So I stressed but Sarah from S.C. helped me out tremendously. She was eager to help me find the dress for my Wedding and was so friendly and professional throughout the whole process. I got it done in the first two appointments!

➳ Which resources helped you the most whilst planning your Wedding?
I wrote a lot of stuff down in lists, either on paper or on my phone. I used a template online for counting guest numbers and sorting out seating but I didn’t have an overall planner or used resources so much. But after doing it all without anything like that - I wish I did it very differently! So I recommend searching out anything that can help!

What was you most favourite moment of the day?
Walking down the aisle and seeing Matt for sure, I nearly tripped on my ribbon flowing from the flower bouquet and was so nervous but seeing him made everything better. Also seeing my Nan there and having her experience the day and having my Grandad watching from my Auntys iPhone (he wasn’t able to travel from Sydney due to illness). Both unfortunately passed away last December but I realised we were so lucky to have them there - it’s such a special moment to remember in my life.

Tell us what marriage means to you:
It means the good, the bad, the ugly, the very real, the wonderfully magical and everything in between. It means patience (when you’ve heard the same story told a million times or being told about something your brain can’t comprehend or soak in - like maths or the way a car/motorbike/anything with an engine works) it means understanding (or at least trying to - in seeing their point of view, even though it’s wrong in most arguments obviously...wink wink) It means stopping and appreciating every day things like when they make you a cuppa or turn on your favourite TV show even when they want to watch their show. It means never running away from your problems and facing reality (even when you want to pretend nothing is wrong) and most of all, it’s being in it together, equally.

Any funny stories to share from the day?
I was so wrapped up in all things wedding in the days leading up to it, I was so focused on everything getting done but the night of the wedding, Matt and I got to our accommodation and I realised I hadn’t packed an overnight bag! I had to choose between sleeping in my dress that had seven layers of tulle or the dressing gown in the room - I had to call my mum the next day to bring me clothes!!!

What advice would you offer to other couples who are planning their own Wedding?
Plan ahead and book in your venue, photographer, catering, celebrant and any styling etc as early and far in advance you can. These guys book out early! Once those are done, everything else starts to fall into place. Find a organisation folder, write everything down and give yourself deadlines to get things done, nothing is fun being done at the last minute.. especially for a Wedding!! Plus, don’t take on stress or pressure from anyone to change the Wedding from what you want. If you do or don’t want children there, if you want the colour scheme to be purple, white or blue, if you want it at the beach or in a field, if you want these outfits or those or a certain vendor over others — say so and make the decision together and stay firm in what you want.

Were there any stand out vendors for the day?
My celebrant Jillian was AMAZING! Very down to earth, funny and so wonderful. Plus Nak Photography, they were professional but also very easy-going. They worked hard to get the beautiful shots of the day and I was so happy with the photos!

➳ Someone that went above and beyond?
Our families and friends! Throughout the whole experience,  people set up the ceremony and the reception (the night before and into the morning), the cake and dessert makers, hairdressers, driving the wedding car, play the music and do so so much, I thank my lucky stars we had so many people that helped out and did such a brilliant job! (A lesson here is, don’t be afraid to ask people you know for help - it can save you loads!)
