➳ How and when was Lisa Gowing Bridal born?
Sydney based designer, Lisa Gowing has spent her career at the forefront of bridal fashion. A graduate of the renowned East Sydney Design School (now UTS) and with also a degree in Visual Arts majoring in Textiles, Lisa Gowing started working in bridal design immediately after completing her studies in 1991. Fashion design and fine arts trained, Lisa debuted her Couture bridal line in 1997 and her demi-couture collection in 2004. Her collection of exquisite high fashion designs in layered silks and exclusive European laces immediately changed the face of bridal design in Australia. Trained in the intricacies of Couture dressmaking from a retiring industry expert twenty two years ago, Lisa uses only the original Couture techniques mainly forgotten in today’s fashion.

➳ Did you always know that you wanted to design Bridal couture?
After graduating form design school and University, I knew I wanted to design a hig-end range of preferably dresses. This combined with my interest in theatre and costume design, bridal design seemed the obvious choice. Shortly after gradation my sister became engaged and I sketched some ideas for her and took her shopping for a gown. We visited a store in Sydney’s Strand Aracde that I had long admired and when the owner saw my sketches she asked me where I had trained. The following week she hired me as in house designer for the store.

➳ What advice would you offer to a Bride that is just starting out on their search for the perfect couture?
I would always advise a bride to keep an open mind when shopping for her wedding gown as someone trained in design would have some ideas for her that she might not have considered herself. I would also recommend that a Bride shop with only 1 or 2 trusted relatives or close friends as too many opinions can be very confusing when trying on gowns.

➳ Do you have a personal favourite style?
I always do have a preferred slimline and fuller style gown in each collection but I believe that Bridal selection is very personal and based on each brides individual style and personality. Plus the location and style of wedding must be taken into consideration when selecting a gown.

➳ Tell us about the best part about what you do:
I love the design process, creating a collection of 12 new styles and matching accessories. From the initial sketches through to hand draping the bodices, pinning the lace and selecting trims. Then the photo shoot collaboration is always a wonderful time when I work with photographer, videographer, hair and makeup and our model and finally see the collection come to life.
